Hockey fans heading to Polar Lakes Park in White Bear Township this weekend for the 2023 Hockey Day Minnesota festivities can look forward to an event experience as smooth as a sheet of freshly resurfaced ice. The Hockey Day Minnesota committee and crew worked with JLG Architects on the design of the temporary outdoor rink and surrounding venue.

“The design challenge was to create a sense of community on an existing soccer complex,” says JLG Architects’ Tom Betti, AIA. “The final design provided a unique venue for the 3,600-seat rink and a ‘town square’ complete with a 16-foot-diameter fire pit.” JLG, which specializes in ice arena design, among other building types, recently completed an award-winning renovation of the nearby White Bear Lake Sports Center.

The four-day hockey happening, hosted by the Minnesota Wild and Bally Sports North, starts today and includes a full schedule of college and high school games, live concerts, a Wounded Warriors event, and activities for attendees of all ages.
